Hi Lucretia, a real estate broker is a licensed professional who acts as an intermediary between buyers and sellers of real estate properties. They are authorized to negotiate and facilitate real estate transactions on behalf of their clients.
A real estate agent is also a licensed professional who works with buyers and sellers of real estate properties. However, the key difference is that agents typically work under the supervision of a broker and do not have the same level of autonomy or authority as a broker.
Whether it is better to work with a broker or an agent depends on your individual needs and circumstances. A broker typically has more experience, knowledge, and resources compared to an agent. However, an agent may be more accessible and offer a more personal approach.
Ultimately, the most important factor is to work with a licensed and reputable professional who can effectively represent your interests and help you achieve your goals in the real estate transaction.
A broker is an agent who leveled up. They've completed additional education beyond the standard agent license, met experience requirements, and passed a more advanced state exam. Every regular real estate agent must work under a licensed broker. A broker can work independently, run their own brokerage, supervise other agents, and hold escrow funds.
The practical difference for you as a consumer comes down to experience and oversight. A broker has met a higher licensing standard and typically has more transaction experience than a newer agent. A managing broker runs the office and oversees the agents who work there. A broker associate has earned their broker's license but chooses to work under another brokerage rather than opening their own.
Is it better to work with a broker? Not automatically. A great agent with five years of experience who hustles, communicates well, and knows their market inside out will serve you better than a broker who's been coasting for twenty years. The license level tells you about education and experience thresholds, but it doesn't tell you about work ethic, market knowledge, or how well someone negotiates.
What matters more than the title is the person. Interview agents and brokers the same way. Ask about their recent transaction history in your area, how they communicate, what their strategy is for your specific situation, and talk to their past clients. The right agent for you is the one who knows your market, responds to your calls, and fights for your interests, whether their card says agent or broker.
A real estate agent is licensed to help people buy and sell real estate, and collects a commission when a transaction is complete. An agent may represent through their sponsoring broker either a buyer or seller.
A real estate broker does the same job as an agent but is licensed to work independently and may sponsor agents. Brokers are paid by commission and also receive a percentage of the commissions of agents who they sponsor.
A REALTOR® is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and may be an agent or a broker.

A real estate broker is a licensed professional who acts as an intermediary between buyers and sellers of real estate. They help clients buy, sell, and rent properties and handle negotiations, contracts, and other details involved in a real estate transaction. Brokers may also manage and oversee a team of real estate agents.
Hi Lucretia,
In a few words, an agent is an individual who is licensed to sell property in their state vs a broker is someone who is licensed to own their own real estate firm. Hope that helps : )
Basically, In real estate... you have to be a Broker or work for a Broker to Do transactions as a Real Estate Agent. A Broker is an agent also, but he hires other agents who are typically not Brokers and take a percentage from their sales as payment for allowing them to close deals under his Brokerage name. So, in short a Broker is a Real Estate agent who has a qualified number of years experience, qualified number of sales and have taken and passed a Brokers Licensure exam.
Usually this does not make much of a difference for the consumer, it is more so relevant to real estate operations. A real estate broker is allowed to manage an office and run a firm if they so desire. For you as the consumer, one vs the other should have no bearing on your day to day business of selling/purchasing your real estate.
A broker has a higher license than a standard agent. Every agent has to hang their license under a broker, but a broker can work on their own or run their own office. Getting there takes extra education and usually a few years of experience as an agent first.
As for pay, no, they don't automatically earn more from you. Commissions are still negotiated the same way. The main practical difference is they tend to have more experience and don't need to check with anyone above them to get things done.

This can very from State to State but typically an agent is sponsored by a Broker(Managing Broker) which gives them the ability to perform real estate services on behalf of the Brokerage they have an Independent Contractors Agreement with. In some States Broker and agent mean the same thing and they work under a Managing Broker.
