How do I clear my data from a smart home before I hand over the keys?

I have smart locks and cameras and a smart thermostat all over the house. Is there a factory reset for a whole house or do I have to go into ten different apps to delete my info? I don't want the new owner seeing my old camera footage and I don't want to be able to accidentally unlock their front door from my phone next month.

There’s no single “whole house reset,” so you’ll need to clear devices individually—but you can do it quickly with a checklist: Remove devices from apps first: in apps like Google Home, Apple Home, or Amazon Alexa, delete each device and remove your home/account Factory reset each device: smart locks, cameras, and thermostats (e.g., Nest Thermostat, Ring Doorbell) all have a reset button or menu—this wipes WiFi and user data Delete cloud data: log into camera/doorbell apps and delete stored video history or subscriptions Unlink accounts: disconnect devices from any linked services (Google, Alexa, Apple)

Factory-reset everything and remove the devices from your accounts, not just from the home. Thermostats, cameras, doorbells, garage openers, smart locks, alarm panels, leak sensors, and any hub. In Spring Hill, I see this miss on almost every smart home I list. The new buyer plugs in and is still seeing your Ring history or your Nest schedule. Fix: log into each manufacturer app, remove the device, then do the physical factory reset on the hardware itself. On the Nature Coast, Florida has no specific smart-home-handover law, but buyers and lenders can ask, and closing day is not when you want to be hunting for passwords. I send Hernando County sellers a one-page checklist before closing: routers reset, cameras wiped, alarm codes cleared, garage remotes relinked. -- Kevin

You have to go through each device and app individually. Factory reset every smart device, remove them from your accounts, and delete any saved footage or recordings. For things like smart locks, delete all user codes and access permissions. Make a checklist of every connected device so you don't miss anything. It's a pain, but there's no whole-house wipe button. If you leave stuff connected, yeah, you could still have access or they could see your old data, which is a privacy mess for everyone.

There is no single factory reset for a whole house unfortunately, but the process is more straightforward than it sounds if you work through it systematically before closing day. The most important thing to understand is that there are two separate steps for each device. The physical reset on the device itself and the removal from your account in the app are not the same thing. You need to do both. A factory reset wipes the device but if you never remove it from your account, you may still have access to it after the sale. Do the app removal first, then the physical reset on the device before you hand over the keys. For cameras, delete all stored footage from the app or cloud account first, then remove the device from your account entirely before resetting it. Ring, Nest, and Arlo all have a device removal option in their app settings. Once you remove it from your account the new owner can add it to theirs fresh with no connection to your history. Smart locks are the most important one to get right. Remove all access codes and user accounts from the lock itself through the app, then factory reset the lock. Most Schlage, Yale, and August locks have a physical reset button or a reset sequence in the settings menu. Do not just delete the app from your phone and assume you are done. For your smart thermostat, Nest and Ecobee both have a reset option under settings that wipes the schedule and account connection. Remove it from your Google or Ecobee account after the reset. If you use a hub like SmartThings or Apple Home, removing the hub from your account will disconnect everything tied to it at once, which saves time. Do the hub last after you have cleared the individual devices. Do all of this a day or two before closing, not after. You want to confirm everything is wiped while you still have access to the house.

There is usually no true whole-house reset unless everything is under one ecosystem, so in most cases you do need to clear it device by device. I would remove each lock, camera, thermostat, hub, and doorbell from the app first, delete old user codes and automations, clear any stored video or cloud subscriptions, then factory reset the devices before closing. After that, make sure the hubs are wiped, Wi-Fi is changed, and test from your phone while away from the house to confirm you no longer have access. It is a little tedious, but it is the safest way to protect both you and the buyer.
